Just a quick note about the baby. His name is Dexter Rhys Hawley. Many have asked for a photo. I'll send one soon. Maybe some video. For now, he's mostly bald, chubby, wrinkly skin, kind of a vacant look on his face, not much of a chin. Essentially, he looks like Don Rickles.

Thurs, May 5 "Cinco de Drinko"

4:00 pm
Got here and they stripped her down ASAP.
Then they checked her cervix…3cm, -1, and something else…I don’t know. If I was a doctor I’d be doing it myself. Long story short, she was borderline as to whether they would induce.

5:30 pm
They decide to get an ultrasound to check the fluid level and the baby’s health.

7:30 pm
Ultrasound lady finally shows up. After a few minutes of gel hocky…8 out of 8 and a.o.k. They decide to watch the EKG.

8:00 pm
I go to get Lorna something to eat…Fettuccini Alfredo with Broccoli and a Med Coke. They say they will use the prostaglandin gel in 2 hours after eating.

10:00 pm
Gel time. One hour on her back and then time to walk. She heard a lady screaming in the distance. A bit un-nerving. Then I heard a baby crying and that made it better.

11:00 pm
Walking the halls to get her moving.

Friday, May 6 "Seis de Hangover"

12:00 (I can never remember if midnight is am or pm)
A few random contractions but really…nothing. Time for another gel.

1:00 am
More walking…Anything yet? Anything yet?

2:00 am
Gel #3, the last one.

4:00 am
Well that was a complete waste of time that will probably cost 4 million dollars. We are both very tired and the doctor, who is home in bed, thinks a pitocin drip is in order. Try to grab a bit of sleep

6:00 am
Got the two full hours. Fresh as a daisy.

7:00 am
The drip is going. For those who don’t know, Pitocin is a med that kicks the body into labor hard and fast. You skip the easy stuff and go to the hard stuff. About 45 min. in, she got her first “Not-so-nice” contraction. I watched her face crumble into horror and her eyes filled with tears. She didn’t even get a couple of hours of easier stuff. My heart broke. I left to get some breakfast and when I got back, she had gotten a bit more used to it.

10:00 am
Lorna is getting wrenched by these contractions. Now I’m going to take a moment to explain Lorna. She hates to be comforted when she is sick. Don’t touch her, Don’t talk to her. So she is on the end of the bed and quivering in pain and I am watching the Incredibles on the computer. And the nurse is looking at me like I am a total jackass husband. They all thought I was a totally insensitive prick because I wasn’t doing the whole “OK baby, now, breath...1…2…3…You’re doing great sweetheart.” If you try that with Lorna, she snaps her head around and says “DON’T TOUCH ME! (add a growl right here)” The nurse started that stuff and I was hoping Lorna would bitch slap her but she’s far to polite. I was going to say something but Lorna would betray me and say “no…that’s OK” because she wouldn’t want to offend. Then I’d really look like a bastard.

10:50 am
Lorna’s mind is being destroyed by pain. They check her cervix (the most painful part of this whole process) 6cm and 90%. Start the epidural!

11:00 am
She’s now on the phone talking to a classmate about her finals next week. Epidurals are magic…voodoo…good JuJu.

The rest went fast. Dilation. Episiotomy (The doctor said she would have significant tearing if not.) Then...

1:26 pm
Baby. They took the baby to weigh (7#,8oz) and measure (20") but we were more interested in watching the Placenta and the suturing of the Episiotomy.

More later…..
